CNBC: Talks between Merkel’s CDU (Christian Democratic Union), the pro-business FDP (Free Democratic Party) and the environmentalist Greens fell apart with lawmakers citing irreconcilable differences. This would be the first time since World War II that a German election hasn’t produced a government.
“It is a day of deep reflection on how to go forward in Germany,” Merkel said following the collapse of talks.
- Merkel is set to meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Monday to decide what to do next
- There are three options on the table, but any of them is bad news for Merkel
- Without clear leadership in Germany, Europe seems to be about to enter standby mode
Opinion: “… its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay” …
If stranded on a desert island and I had to choose only one book of prophecy, I would chose Daniel.
The passage above is from Daniel 2:33. If we back up to the beginning of the chapter, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon was troubled about a dream he had. He could not remember what the dream was about, so he tasked his wise men and astrologers to find out what the dream was and interpret it. If they could not do as he asked, he would cut them to pieces, and their houses would be made an ash heap.
Daniel heard of the dilemma and asked the king for time to pray to God for the interpretation. When Daniel next met with the king, he was able to tell him the dream and the outcome.
Daniel described a statue composed of the empires that would rule the world with great power:
Nebuchadnezzar was the head of gold and his kingdom would be followed by 3 powerful empires. The final empire, Rome, depicted by two iron legs, would be split between two great cities, Rome and Constantinople, and would be revived in the last days – symbolized by 10 toes made of an unstable mixture of iron and clay.
Could there be a better fit than the European Union of today with economically strong northern nations and weak southern nations? The strongest nation in the EU is Germany, and according to Daniel 7:24 when the current structure fails, it will be split up into 10 divisions each with a president.
Germany is the likely linchpin to the fulfillment of the prophecy. If/when Angela Merkel’s government crumbles we look for a strong man to emerge in Europe, as happened in pre-World War II Germany when a charismatic leader emerged to an enthusiastic reception.
In 1935, Winston Churchill wrote an assessment of the new German leader, Adolf Hitler:
“He might yet go down in history as the man who restored honour and peace of mind to the great Germanic nation and brought it back serene, helpful and strong, to the forefront of the European family circle.”
It wasn’t until 1941, the beginning of World War II, that the great statesman changed, and the spirit of Antichrist in Hitler became evident. Revelation 6:1-2 tells us that when the final dictator emerges he will come wearing a victor’s and bringing a message of peace depicted by a bow with no arrows.
After 3.5 years all hell will break loose.
