“The EU calls on all actors on the ground and in the wider region to show calm and restraint in order to prevent any escalation,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed concern in New York: “I have consistently spoken out against any unilateral measures that would jeopardize the prospect of peace for Israelis and Palestinians,” Guterres said. more …
Opinion: The EU comment is a pathetic reminder of Obama/Kerry moral equivalence:
Scenario: Hamas sets up rocket sites in schools and hospitals before firing hundreds of rockets into southern Israel with the intention of killing Jewish civilians – Israel responds by taking out the rocket sites causing unavoidable civilian causalities and both sides are asked to use restraint … rinse – repeat.
The UN chief is concerned about the prospect for peace when there has not been one for 70 years. Mahmoud “I will not accept a Jewish state” Abbas has not changed his tune, and we learned in April from Hamas (‘chamas’ Hebrew for violence) leaders that they have no intention of putting down their weapons or softening their charter:
Article 19 of the New Hamas Charter repeats that there will never be peace so long as Israel still exists. It declares: “We do not leave any part of the Palestinians’ land, under any circumstances, conditions or pressure, as long as the occupation remains. Hamas refuses any alternative which is not the whole liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea.”
But the most stinging criticism came from someone who would know better if he would open a Bible. Pope Francis the leader of 1.2 billion Catholics prayed for the status quo. In other words, keep Arab control of the Temple Mount where they pray at a mosque 5 times per day, but where Jews are not allowed to pray.
Let the status quo continue with stabbings and car rammings, and let the Arabs stage riots over metal detectors after three Palestinians shot and killed two Israeli police in cold blood on July 14, 2017 on the Temple Mount .
Francis’ concern that he wants Jerusalem to be a place for Muslims, Christians and Jews to pray freely is disingenuous at best and downright dishonest at worst. It is because of the democratic principles of the Israeli government that Muslims and Christians can pray freely in Israel. No other country in the Middle East has such freedoms.
Ironically it is Jews that aren’t allowed that freedom by the Muslims who were given control of the temple mount as a gesture of peace in 1967 (source).
