JOL: Israel officially notified UNESCO of its withdrawal from the organization on Friday, which will take effect on December 31, 2018. It now joins the US, which announced its withdrawal in October, citing anti-Israel bias and need for reform in the organization.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said that Israel has formally informed her of its withdrawal. “I regret this deeply,” Azoulay said on Friday. “It is my conviction that it is inside UNESCO and not outside it that states can best seek to overcome differences in the organization’s fields of competence.”

Last week, Israel’s envoy to UNESCO Carmel Shama spoke of the decision to leave the organization. “UNESCO broke all records of hypocrisy, incitement and lies against Israel and the Jewish people, Israel and the Jewish nation…should be the first to donate to this organization and the last to leave. However, in the ‘Theater of the Absurd’ that is UNESCO, sane countries have nothing to find.” more …

Opinion: That the UNESCO head regrets Israel’s decision to leave would be laughable if it were not tragic.

United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization is a non-governmental group in the service of international educational development history founded in 1921. UNESCO became interconnected with Israeli bias following World War II.

Fast Forward to the Barack Obama presidency:

On October 31, 2011 UNESCO voted to admit Palestine into the organization as its newest member. The United States Congress promptly responded by cutting off funding.

On September 30, 2016, President Obama spoke at the funeral of former Prime Minister Shimon Peres. A transcript released from the White House listed the location of the speech as:

Jerusalem Israel

Hours later a corrected transcript from the White House showed the location as:

Jerusalem Israel

A carefully choreographed, series of UNESCO votes followed designed to erase any Jewish connection to the Temple Mount:

  • October 13, 2016 UNESCO votes that there is no connection between the Temple Mount and Jerusalem
  • October 26, 2016 UNESCO adopts a second resolution denying Jewish connection to the Temple Mount

Obama remained silent.

July 7, 2017 UNESCO declared on a second vote that the ancient and hotly contested core of Hebron the burial place of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Leah, has no connection to Judaism.

But this time a new US president was in charge and on October 12, 2017 the United States announced that it is withdrawing from UNESCO citing financial considerations, the need for reform and the organization’s “continuing anti-Israel bias”.

Both Judaism and Islam claim Abraham as their patriarch. The land that God granted to Abraham and his descendants after him (Genesis 17:7-8), however, was meant for Isaac and Jacob.

Ishmael and Esau were excluded from the deed.
