1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”
From Halley’s Bible Handbook, pg. 595: “Venus was the principal deity of Corinth. Her Temple … the most magnificent building in the city. A thousand priestesses, public prostitutes, were kept at public expense, always ready for Immoral Indulgence, as worship to their goddess. Some of the Corinthian Christians … used to a religion that encouraged Immoral Living, were finding it hard to adapt themselves to their new religion which prohibited Immoral Living… Some were quoting [Paul] All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful (v. 12) to justify their promiscuous sexual indulgence. Paul positively states that it does not so apply; and positively … prohibits Christians from such indulgences.”
