UNIV. of MIAMI Magazine: Today… religious faith is in worldwide decline. As a National Geographic report put it, the world’s newest religion is “No Religion.” The University of Miami created the Appignani Foundation Chair for the Study of Atheism, Humanism, and Secular Ethics—the first such chair in the country.

The university announced its intention to create the chair, which was endowed by a $2.2 million donation from retired businessman Louis Appignani, in May 2016. Since then, the search for the perfect candidate has been an extensive and hush-hush process.

Anjan Chakravartty has been named to the University of Miami’s – and the nation’s – first endowed academic chair in the study of atheism, humanism and secular ethics.

Opinion: My alma mater.

“I’m trying to eliminate discrimination against atheists, so this is a step in that direction, to make atheism legitimate.” Louis Appignani
