“For a child has been born to us, A son has been given us. And authority has settled on his shoulders. He has been named
“The Mighty Hashem is planning grace; The Eternal Father, a peaceable ruler”

Isaiah 9:5 (The Israel Bible™)

“Isaiah’s prophecy of the upcoming salvation of the people is combined with a vision regarding the birth of a child. Judging from the context of the prophecy, Isaiah appears to be referring to the righteous King Chizkiyahu (Hezekiah), whom tradition credits with educating all the Children of Israel about the intricacies of Hashem’s (God’s) laws. Over the last three chapters, Isaiah has combined prophecies of redemption with announcements of upcoming births. This signifies that even if the present may seem difficult, the future will always be brighter.” (Breaking Israel News)

Opinion: It is interesting to see how the messianic prophecies of Isaiah that seem so clear to Christians, are explained by the Rabbis. Since the Jewish sages refuse the New Testament, I can understand why John 12:40 is ignored, but John was simply referring to Isaiah 6:10.

Compare John 12:40

“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”

With Isaiah 6:10

“Make the heart of this people dull,
And their ears heavy,
And shut their eyes;
Lest they see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart,
And return and be healed.”

Israel’s unbelief is explained in John 12: 42-43:

“Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”

Who were the Pharisees?

The Pharisees bore an interesting resemblance to the Edomites who left their home in Mt. Seir around 600 BC and settled in Judea (Idumea) until the time of Christ. Edomites were also called Herodians in Scripture and were politically aligned with Herod.

Herod was half-Jewish and was descended from Abraham through Isaac and Esau rather than through Isaac and Jacob. The Herodian dynasty was a royal dynasty of Idumaean (Edomite) descent.

The Pharisees plotted against Jesus:

Mark 3:6 “Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus”

Matthew 12:13 “Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch Him in His words”

The Bible records that many of the Pharisees were Edomites:

John 8:33 “They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

The Pharisees told the Messiah that they had never gone into bondage. This could only apply to the Edomites because the tribe of Judah was taken into captivity in 585 BC by Babylon.

Flavius Josephus Confirms Herod’s Bloodline:

The Jewish historian Josephus (approximately AD 30–100) records at least two times in his writings that Esau’s descendants inhabited the region of Idumea (Edom):

And these were the sons of Esau. Aliphaz had five legitimate sons: Theman, Omer, Saphus, Gotham, and Kanaz; for Amalek was not legitimate, but by a concubine, whose name was Thamna. These dwelt in that part of Idumea.

So he fell upon the Idumeans, the posterity of Esau, at Acrabattene, and slew a great many of them, and took their spoils. Thus, the Idumeans were considered to be the descendants of Esau.

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ:

Edom will be destroyed (Isaiah 63:1-3; Obadiah 1:18) …

“The house of Jacob shall be a fire,
And the house of Joseph a flame;
But the house of Esau shall be stubble;
They shall kindle them and devour them,
And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau,”
For the Lord has spoken”

The Jews will recognize Jesus at His second coming Zechariah 12:10 …

 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn”

And all Israel is saved Romans 11:26.

A brighter future indeed.
