Chapter 5: Israel’s First King The Israelites had been ruled by the Judges for 400 years. 1 Samuel chapter 8 records the story of Samuel’s sons which were dishonest judges over Israel. The people inquired of the Lord as to why there was no king over them. 1 Samuel 8:5 “Then the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Look you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” Samuel prayed to the Lord and was warned of the behavior of the king that would rule over the Israelites: The king will appoint captains to reap the ground and some to make weapons The king will take their daughters to be cooks and bakers The king will take the best of the crops, vineyards and groves for his servants The king will take 1/10th of the sheep The king will make the Israelites servants When the people cry out – the Lord will not hear them And yet, the people said “We will have a king.” Saul Is Appointed King The year is 1100 BC.
