“In this week’s Torah portion it says ‘Now there arose a new king over Egypt…’; like then, like today,” Netanyahu began, referring to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was elected president of Egypt last year following the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak.
“In Egypt, the regime has been replaced, in Syria the regime is being shaken and this could also happen in the Palestinian Authority areas in Judea and Samaria. Everyone knows that Hamas could take over the Palestinian Authority. It could happen after an agreement, it could happen before an agreement, like it happened in Gaza,” He continued, referring to a 2007 coup that saw Hamas replace the PA in the Gaza Strip.”
Opinion: The PM was quoting Exodus 1:8-10 “Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.”
And dealing shrewdly with Israel is just what Mohamed Morsi appears to be up to. If Morsi can replace the PA (Abbas) with his military wing (Hamas) he then controls the Gaza Strip and gets the West Bank in the bargain.
