Times of Israel: TEHRAN, Iran — A top Iranian general said his forces were ready if US President Donald Trump followed through on his warning that Iran would “suffer consequences” if Tehran threatened the United States.
Though Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday there was no need for him to “respond to any nonsensical comment,” Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who heads the elite Quds Force of Iran’s hardline paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said on Thursday that he had an obligation to reply.
“As a soldier, it is my duty to respond to Trump’s threats. If he wants to use the language of threat, he should talk to me, not to the president.”
Opinion: As a Bible prophecy student, I also have a duty (Ezekiel 33:1-6) to respond. The Iranian general will indeed provide martyrs, but not for the God of Jacob.
The only war of the last days in which we find Iran in actual combat is Ezekiel 38-39, called the War of Gog and Magog.
Gog, a prince from the far north, will form an alliance (Ezekiel 38:1-6) to attack Israel to take its vast wealth. Iran (Persia) will be pulled into the attack along with Turkey and North African allies.
“And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the Lord God, “that My fury will show in My face. 19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: ‘Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, 20 so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’ “Ezekiel 38:18-21
This war will be very different than the 1967 Six Day War in a significant way.
After this war, there will be no doubt among the nations that the God of Jacob provided the victory, since no nation will come to Israel’s side, and Israel will be totally unprepared (Ezekiel 38:14), yet will not have to fire a shot.
“I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains,” says the Lord God. “Every man’s sword will be against his brother. And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.”
After this war:
- The descendants of Jacob will know beyond any doubt that God provided the victory (Ezekiel 39:22).
- They will come back to covenant relationship with God and will be pulled home to Israel leaving ‘none behind’ (Ezekiel 39:28).
- “God will not hide His face from them ever again” Ezekiel 39:29
A covenant relationship will require a temple for atonement (Daniel 9:27).
