CBS News: President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw American troops from Syria was made hastily, without consulting his national security team or allies, and over strong objections from virtually everyone involved in the fight against the Islamic State, according to U.S. and Turkish officials.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arranged the Dec. 14 call a day after he had unsuccessfully sought clarity from Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu about Erdogan’s threats to launch a military operation against U.S.-backed Kurdish rebels in northeast Syria, where American forces are based.
Pompeo, Mattis and other members of the national security team prepared a list of talking points for Trump to tell Erdogan to back off, the officials said.
But the officials said Trump, who had previously accepted such advice and convinced the Turkish leader not to attack the Kurds and put U.S. troops at risk, ignored the script. Instead, the president sided with Erdogan. more …
Opinion: “We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there,” wrote President Donald Trump, as he ordered the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Syria, stunning the U.S. foreign policy establishment.
We are extricating America from the forever war of the Middle East so foolishly begun by previous presidents. We are coming home. The rulers and peoples of this region are going to have to find their own way and fight their own wars. We are not so powerful that we can fight their wars while we also confront Iran and North Korea and face new Cold Wars with Russia and China.
The generals were blindsided so much so that US Secretary of Defense Mattis resigned. Russia, Syria, Iran, Hezbollah and ISIS are ecstatic, the Arab world both Sunni and Shia emboldened, but the Kurds, Biblical Medes, are in serious trouble with no buffer against Turkey.
According to Pat Buchanan yesterday (here), the president’s deal with Recep Erdogan included:
- Turkey will purchase the U.S. Patriot anti-aircraft and missile defense system for $3.5 billion, and probably forego the Russian S-400.
- Trump also told Erdogan, we “would take a look at” extraditing Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen whom Erdogan says instigated the 2016 coup attempt that was to end with his assassination.
- Erdogan convinced the US President that his mission in Syria was successful and ISIS is defeated.

In addition, Bible prophecy tells us that Turkey (Gomer/House of Togarmah) will be a principal participant along with Russia, Iran and North Africa in the Gog and Magog war (Ezekiel 38:1-6).
“I will go up against a land of unwalled villages; I will go to a peaceful people, who dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates” (Ezekiel 38:11).
Keep in mind that Ezekiel’s war cannot take place just yet. Another event will have to happen that gives Israel a false sense of security. The Psalm 83 all-Arab attack could be the perfect precursor to Gog and Magog.
If the president’s advisers are unable to talk him out of the Syrian withdrawal, 2019 may well be the year for the first of three prophetic wars:
- Psalm 83 (Arab alliance)
- Ezekiel 38-39 (Gog and Magog)
- Daniel 11:40-45 (Armageddon)
